The St. Louis River is one of the largest walleye spawning areas in Minnesota. The walleyes from Lake Superior make the trip from the lake up the river to the Fon du Lac dam to spawn. Therefore during the early season you can expect to have great fishing and a chance at a trophy walleye. One of the great things about fishing the harbor is the view that you usually don't see from the shore. The view of Duluth along the hill side in the mornings and evenings is breathless. You can also watch ore boats and salties pass through the channels of the harbor. All while you are having a great time fishing!

There are a few very effective ways to fish for walleyes on the St. Louis. The most popular way is with spinners also called harnesses. These are usually used with a night crawler, leech and minnows. Another way that Captain Blaine catches these fish is jig fishing and pulling crank baits. All of these techniques are used on high quality graphite medium action rods. With these rods you can feel every little thing your bait may touch. It won't take long for you to catch on to what a walleye bite feels like.
Fishing the St. Louis River you have a good chance to catch: Walleyes, Muskies, Smallmouth bass, Crappies, Perch and Northerns
